New Sub on the menu: Chicken Tandoori Sub

                                                                                      On the Menu
For a limited time, Subway is offering a Chicken Tandoori sub.  This is in conjunction with the National Day celebrations. This is also the first time a new sub is being introduced on the menu. The chicken Tandoori sub is a new meat option for a sub.  You would add veggies and sauces like you would a normal sub.
Since tandoori chicken in traditionally a spicy dish eaten with bread, you could add peeper and chili sauce for the hot experience.
But in some places, the tandoori chicken is eaten with naan bread and sour sauces. You can try to emulate this with the tandoori sub in a wrap with generous amount of mayo and a dash of honey mustard on lots of onions, cucumbers and lettuce. Hold the tomatoes.

Wheat bread at Carrefour

                                                                                      On the Menu
A nutritional alternative to white bread is whole wheat bread. Just by choosing whole wheat bread instead of white bread, the sandwich becomes that more nutritious. Whole wheat bread contains more nutrients because it is made from grains that have not been as processed. To get white flour which makes white bread, grains go through a bleaching or whitening process. In this process, nutrients are lost. The bran and germ are removed from the wheat to get the white four that is used to make white bread. Whole wheat bread means that the bran and germ remain.
Whole bread are more nutritious because they have

  • Fiber - fiber regulates the digestive system, lowers cholesterol and may reduce your risk of heart disease. Fiber also keeps you feeling full until your next meal or healthy snack.
  • Vitamin B - this is important for a healthy metabolism. Metabolism is how the body access and use the energy from other foods that you eat. Vitamin B is contained in the bran and germ.
  • Iron - carries oxygen in the blood that circulates the body. They partly give blood it's red color.
  • Protein - Like fiber, it also keeps you feeling full. It also plays a part in building muscles, skin and bones.
A great place to buy whole wheat bread loaves is at Carrefour. The loaves are the right size. It can be sliced to make slices to a normal sandwich. Since it comes in loaves, it can be cut to any thickness. Thick slices for sandwiches with more sauce or thinner slices to make tall sandwiches with pieces of bread in the middle of the sandwich. To create a sub, you can cut the bread length-wise but leave the two pieces connected one side. This makes it easier to put the two halves back and hold the sub together. This works for subs made up from sliced deli meats. You could also cut a v-shaped trough from the top of the bread. The trough makes it easier to spread in tuna or chopped fish sticks / crab meats. If there is a lot of sauce or mayo, just line it with lettuce first.
I'm getting hungry just writing this.

Subway at Damansara Uptown 2: Almost a real drive-thru

Location: 31-33 Jalan SS 21/37, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
                                                                                             Outlet
Location: Uptown 2, Damansara Utama. (click on the location link above to see it on a map)
Catagory: Drive-thru

Some Subway outlets are small. There are those that are just are kiosks, with no or shared sitting places for their own. Then there is the Subway outlet at Damansara Uptown 2. It is small and cramped inside. It is impossible to move in between tables during lunchtime without profusely apologising . That doesn't stop a lot of people making it their lunch destination.
I do understand the choice of the outlet, though. There is a wealth of food options around the Uptown area. Investing in a bigger restaurant would not be prudent. It is also at the foot of an office building which means big lunch crowds but little foot traffic on the weekends.
What makes this Subway unique is that it is literally beside the road. So much so, it qualifies as a drive through even though there is no drive-thru counter.

Although there is no drive-thru counter, you could make this a drive-thru if you are with another friend. Assuming the driver also wants a sub, you first take their order. Have them drop you off at the entrance of Uptown 2. It's a bit tricky but what you do is enter thru the driveway in front of the Subway and turn in and back. The driver will drive out and turn right to get back into the main road. They then can take a leisurely driver around the Uptown area, encircling the Uptown towers back to Uptown 2. By now, you should have gone in and got the subs you need.
There are seating outside but are usually taken up the drivers waiting for their bosses. It is a bit dusty on hot days so either take the sandwich away or eat in. The staff are friendly but sometime be careful of staff who look like they are students who are doing it part-time. Sandwich-making is a craft and a bit more involved than burger flipping.  I find that part-timers sometimes don't take as much care or as skilled as full-timers.
Try the drive-thru experience on a weekend if you are in the area and hankering for something good and healthy.

The Cheesy Tuna

                                                                                      Hack Your Sub

You could consider this the polar opposite of the Tuna Extreme. Take a six-inch bun and ask for a tuna sandwich. But instead of spreading it on one side of the split bun. ask for it to be spread on each side. Normally, it's two scoops of tuna per sub. So, ask for it to be spread one each side of the bun, one scoop per side. Now put the two slices of cheese in between the bun. Close it and have it toasted.
What you're gonna get is a six inch sub with tuna and melted cheese. The melted cheese should have bound the split bun together again. Don't open it to add vegetables because there is none needed. Also no condiments and sauces.
I saw this done by another customer in front of me. Interesting, I thought.  The customer was charged RM 7.50 even though it wasn't a Tuesday. I think the staff were too stunned to figure out how to charge it because of the non-standard selection. Your mileage may vary.
My hack on it would be to add either pickles or jalapenos together with the cheese. Or maybe a dash of pepper. They would get 'glued' together with the cheese and tuna.
